Thoughtful Thank You

The other day I met a friend for lunch. We try to get together every couple of weeks and just catch up. It's a fantastic way to break up the week and I love it.

As it usually does, the conversation turned to how Tim & I are doing, a couple tests he is waiting for results on, and our Baby Mission. That's when the conversation shifted and she started asking me questions about specifics in our case - numbers, dates, treatments. She continued by talking about "how she could help". Well, she's already helping in my book - ever since the Great Savings Plan went into effect, she hasn't let me pay for a single one of our lunch dates. (Granted, she now thinks I should name the baby after her now, but we'll let that slide.)

Anyhow, she tells me about different ideas that she has had for fundraisers and ends up talking about a website that she has found that allows people to make donations to different causes. She has set one up for us and wanted my blessing.

Tim and I talked about it a lot.

In the beginning, we had discussed different fund raisers, unique, strange and downright weird ways to raise money. Instead, we decided to put our noses to the grindstone and work a lot. We each have a side project going to bring in a bit of extra income. Save a lot, splurge as little as possible and see where we ended up by the end of the year.

Well, the end of the year has come and gone and the one thing that we have realized is that we are going to have to take out a loan about the size of a car loan to get pregnant. People do it all the time, and we don't feel sorry for ourselves. This whole IVF thing just wasn't something we planned on. We knew we would have to do IUI, but we had saved up and thought we were ahead of the game. Had we known, maybe we would have chosen to be married in a quiet civil ceremony instead of having a wedding. Maybe we wouldn't have gotten a house - who knows, but this is where we are and it does no good to second guess.

So, back to the story... Tim & I talked and came to a decision.We are very grateful to have friends who are always looking out for us and think that Christine's gesture so thoughtful and from the heart. Since Tim was first diagnosed, so many people have told us that they want to help. They have looked for ways to help and been frustrated if there was just nothing they could do. Maybe this isn't just for us, but also for anyone who wanted to something but didn't know what they could do.

We don't want anyone to feel pressured. We don't want to be a charity case. We can deal with anything that comes our way - fertility challenges included. If you want to contribute your morning coffee money, however, we will certainly be appreciative.

Thank you to everyone who has stood by up through thick and thin. More than anything it means so much to both of us to have such a strong support system to laugh and cry with.  No matter where this journey takes us, it is better because of our friends and family.
